Abstract

1339544 Electro-chemical machining DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 11 June 1971 [25 April 1970] 19993/70 Heading C7B In a method of electro-chemically machining a hole, a jet of electrolyte is discharged on to the surface of the workpiece and an electric current is passed through the workpiece and electrolyte to a point of negative potential until the hole reaches the required depth whereupon both current and electrolyte supply are switched off. The apparatus comprises a conduit having a nozzle 36 at one end and mounted on a compound slide 14. The workpiece 50 is placed on a stainless steel table 34 inside a transparent plastics box 24. The electrolyte tank 47 is made the cathode and the workpiece the anode. The potential is 600 volts. Electrolyte is pumped from tank 47 to nozzle 36 via connection 46. The conduit may be lined with a ceramic material in order to filter the electrolyte. More than one hole may be provided in the nozzle. The jet of electrolyte is discharged with sufficient momentum to break up at the point of impact into a mist so dispersed so as to be non conductive.
