Abstract
<PICT:1002957/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1002957/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1002957/C6-C7/3> <PICT:1002957/C6-C7/4> An electrode having tapering sides is used to machine a tapered cavity in a workpiece. The electrode may have electrolyte supply passages therethrough to its end portion, Figs. 3 and 9, or may be solid, Fig. 13. The electrode's side walls are smooth, electrically conductive contain no aperture for the supply or escape of electrolyte and converge to the electrode's end portion. Electrolyte is passed between the electrode and workpiece under a pressure of 100 lb./sq. inch or more whilst keeping the distance between the electrode and workpiece at or lower than 0.015 inch, e.g. using an electrode advance rate of 0.1-1 inch/ minute. Fig. 3 shows a copper electrode 21 where electrolyte is fed from a recess 23 through passages 27 and transverse slot 29. In the electrode of Fig. 9 the slot has been omitted. Fig. 13 shows a solid copper electrode 43 with electrolyte supply to its end portion through passages 39 and 35 in a clamp 37 and the workpiece WK respectively. Prior to forming the tapered cavity, a parallel sided cavity may be formed by a copper electrode having a flange plat 31, Fig. 7, and insulated sides 33. An electrolyte of KCl, KNO3, Rochell salts and potassium citrate may be used. Alternatively 10% NaCl or an electrolyte as described in Specification 943,101 may be used. By the method, a hollow bolt having a hexagonal socket in its head may be made or gaps between turbine blades may be machined. Specifications 944,613 and 1,002,956 also are referred to.
