Abstract

1505065 Electro-erosion ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 14 March 1975 [23 March 1974] 13029/74 Heading B3V [Also in Division C7] A conically shaped passage is formed in a workpiece 44 by a combined electrochemical and electrical discharge machining method by flowing a weak electrolyte along the exterior surface of an elongate consumable electrode 43 supported in a guide 76, periodically advancing the electrode 43 through the guide 76 to successive positions substantially in contact with the workpiece 44 to cause the workpiece 44 to be spark eroded by electrical discharge of a capacitor 51 connected in parallel with the machining gap between the electrode 43 and workpiece 44, and electrochemically machining the workpiece 44 during recharging of the capacitor 51 whilst the electrode 43 is being advanced towards the workpiece 44. In operation, the electrode 43 is advanced by a stepping motor 46 towards the workpiece 44 through a guide tube 76 surrounded by a collar 68 to which electrolyte is supplied whereby the electrolyte flows down the electrode 43. During the advance of the electrode 43, which may be vibrated, the workpiece 44 is electrochemically machined using a D.C. current supplied via a resistor 52 until the electrode 43 is about to touch the workpiece 44 whereupon a capacitor 51 discharges to machine the workpiece 44 by spark erosion. Upon detection of the discharge of the capacitor 51, the electrode 43 is withdrawn by the motor 46 and then advanced again towards the workpiece 44 whereupon the cycle is repeated. The breakthrough of the electrode 43 through the workpiece 44 is detected by monitoring the peak potential between the electrode 43 and workpiece 44 or the frequency of spark discharges whereupon the speed of the motor 46 is slowed and the machining operation terminated after a predetermined time. A plurality of passages can be machined simultaneously. The shape of the passage produced can be varied by adjusting the proportion of electrical discharge to electrochemical machining by changing the size of the resistor 52. A succession of passages may be produced by automatically controlling the apparatus (Fig. 9, not shown). The electrolyte used comprises tap water, sodium sulphate in deionized water or potassium chloride and sodium acetate in deionized water.
