Abstract

1404374 Ignition apparatus for arc welding systems MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 14 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972 (8) 8 Nov 1972] 7354/73 Heading H2H Ignition apparatus for striking an arc in an arc welding machine comprises means whereby the charge on a capacitor is caused to discharge through a coil in a single pulse at any desired instant in the half cycles of the normal welding current whereby a voltage pulse is injected into the welding circuit so as to strike an arc. An A.C. source is connected to a terminal 2 so as to supply current to a welding electrode connected to a terminal 3 by way of a coil CC magnetically coupled to a coil L, the coil L being connected in a closed circuit including a capacitor C1 and a discharge type switch SW having main electrodes 4, 5 and a trigger electrode P. The capacitor C1 is charged from a D.C. source E1. When it is desired to initiate an arc in the welding machine a pulse is applied to a thyristor SW1 whereupon a capacitor C2, which has been previously charged from a D.C. source E2, discharges through an autotransformer I.C. thus to produce a pulse at the trigger electrode P of the discharge switch SW. The switch SW becomes conductive so that the capacitor C1 discharges through the coil L thereby inducing a single pulse into the coil CC to initiate an arc in the welding machine. When it is desired to re-strike an arc during welding it has been found to be preferable to have the capacitor to C1 charged to a lower potential and the capacitor C2 to a higher potential and to this end switches SW2, SW3 are provided. Alternatively the capacitance of C2 may be variable. The trigger pulse for the switch SW may be arranged at any desired instant in the waveform of the welding current supply and it may further be arranged that the positive and negative half cycles of the welding current have the same effective value. The welding voltage waveform may be rectified and compared with a D.C. reference voltage to provide a pulse for the switch SW. It is said that the interference produced by the apparatus of the invention is reduced from that of a known spark type arc striking apparatus.
