Abstract

1,142,959. Strain insulators. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON - HOUSTON - HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 5 July, 1966 [5 July, 1965], No. 30200/66. Heading H2C. A strain insulator comprises two conductors (AB) and (CD) and four rigid insulators connected in tetrahedral form as shown. The insulators may be hardened glass or glazed ceramic porcelain. The conductor AB is connected by conductors AN, BN to the end N of a first cable while conductor CD is similarly connected to the end M of a second cable. The cables may constitute a stay for a pylon or mast carrying an antenna. The cables will remain mechanically connected even if one or more insulators break. The conductors AB and CD are subjected to tension only, may be flexible, and may be adjustable in length enabling the tension in the cables to be varied. The conductors may be shielded with metal tubes to prevent damage by arcing which is arranged to occur across IJ.
