Abstract

1,142,915. Hollow charge devices. K. DIEHL. 14 March, 1967 [16 March, 1966], No. 11864/67. Heading F3A. A hollow charge device, e.g. a projectile, comprises an axially symmetrical hollow charge 24 adapted to be ignited about an annular surface 28 by a primer charge 27 having the same axis of symmetry as the hollow charge, and an initiating charge 32 located on the axis of symmetry of the primer charge and separated therefrom by a conical or nozzle-shaped hollow focusing chamber 30 which has a narrow opening directed towards the centre of the primer charge, whereby the priming flash from the initiating charge is concentrated and acts on the primer charge with a high energy load per unit area, even in the case of an uneven radial detonation of the initiating charge. A body, e.g. of polyethylene, is fitted in a recess in the hollow charge. The charge 32 may be a detonator which is initiated by a fuze 36 inserted in a cap 20. The chamber 30 has a cone angle of 40 to 50 degrees and is formed in a steel body. In another embodiment a detonator (10, Fig. 1, not shown) is contained in a plug (8) at one end of the device. In a modification a detonator (17, Fig. 2, not shown) is carried in a pivoted carrier (16) which is swung about its pivot to align the detonator with the focusing chamber.
