Abstract

976,483. Projectiles. LES FORGES DE ZEEBRUGGE S.A. Feb. 16, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 5843/61. Heading F3A. [Also in Division F1] The stabilizing fins 10 of a self-propelled projectile are unfolded away from the longitudinal axis of the projectile by the propelling gases when the projectile leaves the bore of the launching device and are locked in position by a sliding tuyere 11 fitted with a smooth friction fit in a tuyere plate 2 rigidly connected to the rear end of the body 1 of the projectile. The propelling gases pass through the tuyere 11 and act directly on the fins 10 causing them to pivot on their respective pins 9 until they reach their maximum unfolded position. The propelling gases also act on the tuyere 11 and move it from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 5. In order not to damage the fins 10 by violent action of the tuyere 11 the velocity of the latter is checked by an annular chamber 12 which acts as a shock absorber and contains a fluid such as air or oil, or other compressible material. In order to maintain the tuyere 11 in its outer position after unfolding of the fins 10, a keying means may be provided between the contacting surfaces of the tuyere 11 and the plate 2, for example, a rough or uneven part 14 may be provided on at least one of these two surfaces by grinding.
