To all whom it'may concern: 7
-Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. GREEN, lieut., Ordnance Department, United States Army, a citizen of the United States, stationed at Washington, D. C., have invented an Improvementin Shoulder-Rests for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment of any royalty thereon.
The object of my invention is to provlde a novel shoulder-rest for machine guns, etc., in which the shoulder-rest-piece may be quickly and easily adjusted relative to its support, to meet the requirements of different operators.
With this object in view, the invention resides, generally stated, in a shoulder-rest embodying a support attachable to agun, and having a depending standard or post, on which is mounted a slidable shoulder-restpiece, the standard and the shoulder-restpiece having a tongue-and-groove connection, and means for frictionally holding the shoulder-rest-piece in adjusted position.
For a fuller understanding of the invention, reference may be had-to the accompanying drawings in, which like reference characters designate correspondin parts throughout the several views, which latter may be briefly described as follows Figure 1 is a plan view of my shoulderrest;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, partly insection, thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a detail view, in side elevation, of the member which is attachable to the gun, and which carries the support for the shoulder-rest-piece.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawingsi 1 designates a tubular member having a longitudinal slit 2, extending from one end thereof and terminating short of the other end. This tubular member is slipped over an extension of the stock of the machinegun, and isfrictionally clamped thereto by means of a clamping-bolt 3, hinged at 4 toa strap 5, passing partly around the member 1, at the split portion thereof, and having ears 6, 6, between which said clamping bolt 3 is adapted to project, the threaded portion 7 of the bolt carrying a wing nut 8, wh1ch may be screwed against the ears 6, 6, thereby tending to contract the tube 1 and bindit upon the extension of the stock. Said tubular member and the means for securing the same to the stock of the gun form no part of this invention.
Carried by the tubular member 1, at'the end thereof opposite the strap 5, is a depending standard or'post 9, provided with a longitudinal slot 10, and with longitudinal grooves 11, 11 in the sides thereof.
Slidable on said standard-9 is a shoulderrest-piece comprising a slide 12, having a lateral wing 13 preferably transversely corrugated throughout a portion of its length, as shown at 14. The slide is preferably constructed of sheet metal stamped to shape, and is provided with longitudinal flanges or lips 15, 15 entering the grooves 11,11. Thus, the standard 9 and the slide 12 have a tongueand-groove connection.
Suitable means are provided for frictionally holding the slide in adjusted position, and in this instance, such means preferably comprise a clamping bolt 16, passing transversely through the sides of the slide 12 and having a cross-sectionally squared portion 17 to fit the slot 10 and prevent rotation of the bolt therein, and havin also, a threaded portion 18, on which is t readed a wing nut 19. In operation, by screwing up the nut 19 on the bolt 17 the sides of the slide 12 will be caused to frictionally bind against the sides of the post 9, and thereby frictionally hold the slide in adjusted position.
It will be noted that, by the construction described, I have provided a shoulder-rest of exceedingly simple construction in wich the shoulder-rest-piece is easily and quickly elevated or lowered on the support (such as the post or standard 9), to suit the requirements of different operators.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and deslre to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shoulder rest including a member attachable .to the rearwardly projecting cylindrical portion of a machine gun stock, a depending standard integral with said member at the rear end thereof, said standard provided with a longitudinal slot, a shoulder rest piece slidable on said standard and means passing through the slot and engaging rear end thereof, said standard provided with a longitudinal slot, a shoulder rest 10 piece slidable on said standard and means passing through said slot and engaging the shoulder rest piece for clamping the piece in selected position upon said standard.
SAMUEL G. GREEN.
