Description

Aug. 13, 1963 P. TELLIE 3,100,357
FOLDABLE BUTT FOR PORTABLE SMALL ARMS Filed May 12, 1961 United rates atent FOLDABLE BUTT FOR PURTABLE SMALL ARMS Paul Teliie, Saint-Etienne, France, assignor to Manufacture Nationale dArmes de Saint-Etienne, Saint-Etienne,
France, a corporation of France Filed May 12, 1961, Ser. No. 109,532 Claims priority, application France July 20, 1960 3 Claims. (CI. 42-72) This invention pertains to portable small-arms and more particularly to a foldable butt for portable smallarms.
An object of the invention is the provision of an improved foldable butt for powerful portable small-arms, the securing of which is rigid and provides no vlooseness in spite of large reaction forces produced by the powerful discharge in certain portable arms, while said arrangement may be readily and economically produced.
According to my invention, the butt is secured through dual means retaining said butt and providing a V-shaped surface between the male and female sections formed by the butt and the receiver and assembled transversely through clamping by means of screws, said securing means being permanently carried by the butt itself.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a pre ferred embodiment of my invention. In said drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side view, partly in section, on a reduced scale, of a foldable butt and associated receiver.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross-section along the line 22 in FIG. 1, showing the butt secured in the receiver in an extended position.
FIG. 3 shows the butt and receiver of FIG. 2 wherein the butt is released from the receiver for being folded thereagainst.
FIG. 4 is a section taken along the line 4-4 in FIG. 2.
According to my invention, the receiver 1 is provided with a longitudinal groove 1 opening in the shape of a V in the surface 1 of its rear section 1 so as .to form sloping surfaces adapted to be engaged by corresponding surfaces 1 of an inserted head 2 on the tubular butt 3 which is guided by a slotted rod 2 which is secured by rivets 4 to tubular butt 3.
The inserted head 2 is secured rigidly according to the position of the tubular butt '3 in its extended or folded condition by a screw 5 having a T-shaped bevelled 'head 5 At the opposite end of the screw 5, a threaded section is adapted to receive a winged nut 6 with a trusto-conical base housed inside a corresponding recess in the receiver :1. The receiver 1 retains the head 2 and the butt 3 therewith at the end of the travel of the nut by an inner groove formed in winged nut 6 which is engaged by the head of a small screw 7 screwed axially into the screw '5. This allows loosening and, consequently, releasing of the double-acting securing means through a rotation of the whole securing means through 180, whereby the receiver 1 and the tubular butt 3 may be folded back onto one another to reduce the longitudinal extent of the portable small arm by about one-half. FIG. 3 shows the receiver 1 rotated through 180 relative to the position shown in FIG. 2. The butt 3 is shown in solid lines also rotated through 180. The butt 3 is shown in dotted outline in FIG. 3 folded back with respect to the receiver 1.
The tubular butt 3 has a specially shaped end, as shown at 3 so as to form a rectangular bearing surface constituting the actual butt and carrying the butt plate 8 made 3,106,357 Patented Aug. 13, 1963 tion ofthe butt is perpendicular to said axis, so as to lie across the axis of the bearing surface for absorbing the recoil of the small-arm.
Obviously, this arrangement may be executed in any desired size according to the type of the portable smallarm to be equipped.
As apparent from the above description, my invention is by no means limited to the specific embodiments disclosed hereinabove and it covers all the modifications thereof falling within the scope of the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with the body of a portable smallarm, a receiver having in opposite sides of the rear end thereof an elongated V-sh-aped longitudinal groove and a frusto-conical recess respectively, an elongated butt including at the trout end thereof a head for engaging snugly said V-shaped groove, a nut for engaging snugly said frusto-conical recess and a screw threadedly engaging said nut, said screw including a head for engaging the surface of said butt remote from said V-shaped groove to hold selectively the head of said butt in said v-shap ed groove with the butt directed away from and substantially parallel to the small-arm body and in la released condition in which said butt is collapsible over the small-arm body.
2. In combination with the body of a portable smallarm, a receiver having in opposite sides of the rear end thereof an elongated V-shaped longitudinal groove and a frust-o-conical recess respectively, an elongated butt in cluding at the front end thereof a head for engaging snugly said V-shaped groove, a nut for engaging said frusto-conical recess, a screw threadedly engaging said nut, said screw including a head in engaging the surface of said butt remote from said V-shaped groove with said butt directed away from and substantially parallel to the small-arm body and in a released condition in which said butt is collapsible over the small-arm body, and an auxiliary screw screwed coaxially into the firstmentioned screw, said auxiliary screw including a head tor engaging said nut to limit the relative movement of said butt and said receiver in the direction of the axes of said screws.
3. In combination with the body of a portable smallarm: a receiver having in the opposite sides of the rear end thereof an elongated V-shaped longinidinal groove and a frusto-conical recess respectively; an elongated butt including at the =firont end thereof a head for engaging snugly said V-shaped longitudinal :groove, an elongated body having an outer end aligned with the axis oi the small-arm body and an end portion at said outer end extending inclinedly to the axis of the small-arm body, a butt plate rigidly connected with said end portion of said butt; a nut for engaging snugly said tr-usto-conical recess; and a screw threadedly engaging said nut, said screw including a head tor engaging the surface of said butt remote [from said V-shaped groove for holding selectively the head of said butt within said V-shaped groove with said butt directed awayfrom and substantially parallel to the small-arm body and in a released 0 condition in which said butt is collapsible over the smallof rubber or any other suitable rigid or yielding material.
Butt plate 8 is secured to the end portion of butt 3 by screws 9. t
It should be well understood that tubular butt 3 extends, by reason of its angular position and of its length, along the longitudinal axis of the small-arm, while the end porarm body.
