RIFLE-$1003.: 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JacoB ALEXANDE DavInsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Elk Lake, in the district of Timiskaming, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Imp-rovements in Rifle-Stocks, as describedin the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,.that form part of the same.
The principal objects of this invention are, to eliminate the inconveniences usually attendantupon carrying a sporting rifle,
injure the rifle and which when extended"- will be extremely rigid and maybe very quickly folded or extended to the firing position.
The principal feature of the invention in the novel construction and arrangement of a loop member pivotally connected to the stock and adapted to be firmly held in an extended position and to be folded back uponthe rifle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a rifle showing my improved folding stock inthe folded position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view showing the stock extended. 1 Fig.3 is an enlarged perspective detail of the detachable member adapted to replace the ordinary stock. 7 V
It iswell known to those used to working in thebush thata rifle'is a most awkward thing to carry when the person is handicapped with extra loads or in doing any kind of work, even when the rifle is hung on the back, as the butt projectsoutwardly and in the movement of the'body catches upon the brush or in .stooping down it sticks out in anungainly manner and also prevents the wearer from sitting down.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a collapsible stock which will form a strong and rigid butt while shooting but which may be moved out of the way so that the objectionable projecting butt will be eliminated.
Specification of Letters Tatent.
r PatentedSept.9,1919. 1 Application filedApr il 14, 1919:: Serial 2109289389.
To accomplish this result I have devised a structurein which a short stock 1 is shaped to fit the rifle frame havlng a socket 3 arranged in the top and bottom to be se,
cured bythe fastening screws which hold the ordinary stock to the frame. The sup-' A metal member 5 preferably formed of I a casting, though it may be forged, is fitted against the butt end of the stock and the particularly in regard to the butt interfering with the free" movement ofthe person in handling other articles or working through side arm portions 6 fit snugly into the sockthe supplementary stock by suitable screws.
The butt end of the member 5 is formed withlips 7 projecting laterally beyond the side arms and these lips are formed with notches 8 therein. i
The movable stockisformed of a length of rod 9 preferably heavy/spring steel wire bent into the form of a loop and having the looped portion bent angularly upward and curved downwardly to form a butt 10 adapted to fit against the shoulder. The portions 11 beyond the bent loop extends parallel to each other and the extremities are bent inwardly at right angles. These right. angularly bent ends 12 extend into and are journaled in the holes 13 in the side arms 6 of the member 5,
Each of the ends is provided with a washer 14: and a cotter pin 15 tosecure the end in place, though the end may be threaded and a nut secured thereto or any suitable fastening means may be secured to the inner Ends to hold the loop member in the mem- The parallel side arms are adapted to fit snugly into the notches 8 when the stock is extended and being of spring material they maybe sprung apart to be released. The looped formation allows the stock, when released from the member 5, to swing over the breech and hand guard portion A of the rifle and to fit snugly against the sides thereof, being entirely out ofthe way. The stock when extended is rigidly supported as the pivot ends 12 are secured a considerable dis tance from the notched holding lips 7 7 It will be seen that the butt may be drawn into position very quickly by simply grasping the point of the loop when in the posi tion shown lland swinging it out \vardly' and the spring sides engaging the member 5 slip .over the projecting lips 7, spreadingnpart thereon until the notches 8 are reached, when the side members spring into said notches and hold the membefse-f' curely.
A lug 16 projects downwardly from the bottom of the member 5 and carries-a suitable ring to which may be attached a carrying sling.
The whole device may be quickly detached from the rifle and the ordinary wooden stock and butt replaced if desiredfor ordiotally secured to sa id stock and adapted to be swung into a position extending each side of the hand guard.
2. In a rifle stock, the combination with the rifle frame, of a short stock secured to the frame, an extension formed of a rigid metal loop formed of a smgle piece and hav- 7 ing a butt portion and parallel side portions pivotally secured to the stock and adapted to swing thereon to bring the looped butt portion over the hand guard, and means for flocking the loopedmember in an extended position. 7
3. In a riflestock, the combination With the rifle frame, of a short'stock secured in the frame, a metal base secured to said stock and having side arms extending alongside said stock-and formed with notched projections at the base of said arms, a springmetal loop-shaped to form a stock extension having a butt the parallel side portions thereof having ends pivotally connected to the forward portion of the side arms of the metal base of the stock, said arms being adapted to spring engage the notches in, the projections ofsaid base and adapted to be freed therefrom and swung alongside'the rifle.
I. In arifle stock, the combination with the rifle frame, of ashort stock secured in said frame, a metal basewsecured' to said stock andehaving side arms extending forwardly and formed with pivot holes adjacent to the forward ends, said base having lateral notched, projections at the butt end,
I a loop'of heavy spring wire shaped to form abutt and having parallel side portions formed with inturned ends adapted to extend into the pivot holes in theside arms of said base, and means securedito the extremities; ofthe. inturned ends. of said wire'loop for securing the said ends in said ,arms.
