Abstract
1,139,122. Tundishes; ladles. N. F. TISDALE and R. A. TISDALE. 6 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 10387/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions B3 and H5] A metal pouring nozzle 18 used in a tundish or ladle for the continuous casting of iron or steel, is provided with electric heating means. The zirconium oxide nozzle body 34 is provided with a conducting graphite, zirconium carbide, zirconium diboride or yttrium zirconia insert 28 having a 0À02 to 0À03 inch surface coating 32 of silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, zirconium oxide, zirconium carbide, boron carbide, yttrium boride or yttrium oxide. A helical induction coil 42 wound round the nozzle body 34 or situated in a well formed in the nozzle body maintains the insert 28 at over 2,900 F. and the surface coating 32 within 50 F. of the temperature of the molten metal stream to prevent any clogging of aperture 30. Coil 42 is connected in parallel with fixed condenser 48, and variable condensers 50-58 which compensate for changes in electrical properties with temperature.
