[Also in Division A3] A length of flexible sheet material 15 to be wrapped about an article 40 is first engaged at one end with the article 40, is then joined (as shown at 41b) over one surface of the article to project on both sides, and the two projecting sides are then wrapped in turn over the opposite surface of the article. In the form illustrated a shank stiffener 40 for a shoe, inserted by an operator in a funnel 50, is guided by a leafspring 51 to the narrow exit of the funnel. A presser block 53 then pushes the funnel so that the bottom end of the shank engages the end of a length 15 of adhesive tape fed by a reciprocating carriage and pawl 16 and cut off by a hot wire (not shown). In response to a signal the operator then presses the shank stiffener 40 further into the funnel so that it is gripped between a metal roller 60 and a rubber roller 61 which pull it down to the position shown at 41b, simultaneously wiping the adhesive tape on to the shank. In the position 41b the shank rests on the notched end of a stop 141 where it is steadied by a slide 93 with a notched end (94) (Fig. 3, not shown). A resilient pad (101) (Fig. 6, not shown), is then moved to wrap one projecting end of the tape around the shank, this block is retracted, and a similar block 201 wraps the opposite margin of the tape. A metal block 121 then presses the wrapped tape against the shank. The completed shank is discharged to a delivery shoot 155 by pivotal movement of the stop 141 about a point 148.
