Abstract

Strapping (5) is fed from a storage drum (7) underneath the machine, over a roller (6) and upwards through a needle head (13), the loose end (2) being gripped in a clamp (3). The loose material (26) is placed on the bed and compressed in stages, by a ram (8) moving horizontally, against the strapping and the previously formed bale (27). The new bale passes under a gate (4), pulling the strapping as it moves. When compressed, a curved arm (11) with the needle head (13) attached swings upwards through a passage (22) in the ram (8). The two strapping ends are tensioned and cut off and the loose end retained for recommencing the cycle.
