Abstract

986,607. Bundling machines. GERRARD WIRE TYING MACHINES CO. PROPRIETARY Ltd. Dec. 31, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1963], No. 51405/63. Heading B8C. Bundles, e.g. wool bales, are tied by a number of straps 9 simultaneously while compressed between platens 6, 7, each strap being fed by a driven roller 19 so that it is passed round the bundle to a gripper 62, tightened by a driven roller 33 severed by a blade, Fig. 10 (not shown), and joined by jaws which crimp a seal blank round overlapped portions 9c, 9d of the strap. Each bale is supplied to the lower platen 6 from a conveyer 3 and slide 8, Fig. 1. A door 16, having guide grooves 49 for the straps, is moved pneumatically against the bale, Fig. 2, when the bale breaks a light beam on arrival at the platen 6, which is raised automatically a predetermined distance to compress the bale. The strap 9 is fed round the bale when eccentric bushes 24 of an idler roller 18 are turned, thereby forcing the strap against the driven roller 19. The strap is fed through a crimping mechanism 72 and into a groove 52 of the lower platen 6. Spring-loaded bars, Figs. 8-9 (not shown) hold the strap within the groove 52 until tensioning takes place. A similar groove is formed in the upper platen 7. The mechanism 62 for gripping the strap end includes a spring-loaded roller, Figs. 11-13 (not shown), which is wedged against the strap when the tensioning rollers 32, 33 operate. A ram is actuated to crimp the seal blank on to the strap which is first gripped by a pad, Fig. 10 (not shown). A part 13 of strapping head 11, on which part the crimping mechanism 72 is mounted, is pivoted sideways about a point 14 to enable the overlapping parts 9c, 9d of the strap to be removed from the crimping mechanism. The strapped bale is lowered on the platen 6 for ejection by hydraulic bars 101, Fig. 1, on to a discharge conveyer 4.
