Abstract

1358148 Strapping bales SIGNODE CORP 10 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 22396/73 Heading B8C A method of strapping a bale comprises compressing material between platens 13, 14 to form a bale, feeding a strap 28 around the bale to form a loop having overlapping strap portions, constricting the loop into tight binding engagement with at least one side of the bale, and forming a closure in the overlapping strap portions, the step moving the loop to shift the closure from one side of the bale to another. The strap may be moved by a roughened or knurled wheel 38 movable on a pivoted arm 36 between a retracted position and an anvil 34. An air motor 78 rotates the wheel to shift the strap located between it and the anvil. Alternatively (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the strap may be shifted by a gripping assembly reciprocable in one or a plurality of steps along a bale side. The platens have a plurality of strap grooves 18 and 19. The strapping device 40, which includes feed and tensioning rollers 48, 49 and a seal magazine 43, and the shifting device 30 are mounted on legs 21, 22 of a frame 20 which is movable on rollers 25, 26 between pairs of grooves 18, 19. Either platen 13, 14 may be movable to compress the bale, or the baling press may be horizontally disposed.
