Abstract

1,253,050. Bundling newspapers. POWER INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Dec., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 60292/68. Heading B8C. A bundle 70 of newspapers is wrapped in a film 21, compressed, and bound with a strap 71 of binding material. The bundle 70 is pushed on to an infeed conveyer 14 by a pair of plates 65 which as they advance cause a press arm 67 to be lowered to compact the bundle, and the bundle is carried on to a web of the film 21 which is disposed between spaced reels 22, 23. The conveyer 14 feeds the bundle to further conveyers 15, 16 and against stop-plates 62 which activate a switch to retract the plates 62 and lift the press arm 67. This retraction halts the conveyers and lowers a sealing bar 19 towards a further sealing bar 18. The sealing bar 19 carries the film 21 over the bundle and abuts the further sealing bar 18 to sever the film 21 and heat seal it to form a sleeve around the bundle and re-join the free ends of the film to reform the web. A housing 36 containing binding material feeding, tensioning and sealing means, and supporting a track 37 for guiding the strap 71 is then lowered to compress the bundle. The strap 71 is then fed around the bundle, tensioned and then sealed (e.g. by friction welding in the case of a plastics strap). On completion of the binding the housing 36 and the sealer bar 19 are raised, and the conveyers are restarted. The package may then be fed to a heat shrinking tunnel by the conveyer 16. The ends of the sleeve may be closed by folding.
