1,250,707. Wrapping and strapping objects. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 20 March, 1970 [11 April, 1969], No. 18766/69. Heading B8C. A method of packaging a pile 4 of steel sheets comprises wrapping a steel sheet 6 around the pile 4 so as to form projecting flaps 22, 24, tensioning a band 42 around the pile 4 to form the flaps 22 into partial folds 14, and then folding the flaps 24 on to the band 42. The pile 4 is carried on a conveyer 30 to a position surrounded by a horizontal band guide 32 of a banding apparatus, and location plates 34 having bandguiding grooves 36 are moved against the end faces 12, 14 of the pile. The band 42 is then tensioned around the pile, the guide 32 is raised, and the pile 4 is advanced to a position surrounded by a vertical band guide 38 of a second banding apparatus. Blocks 40 having inclined face 41 are then moved towards the pile 4 to partially fold the lower flaps 24, and a second band 46 is passed around the pile 4 to fold the flaps 24. The pile 4 is again advanced and a third band 48 is tensioned around the pile.
