Abstract

1311490 Packaging machines METAVERPANV 7 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 58059/70 Heading B8C A machine for applying, tensioning, and sealing a synthetic band around a parcel, comprises a clamp 38 on a packing block 37 for holding the front end of the band, a device for tensioning the band round the parcel, a reciprocating block 21 which seals the overlapping band parts, and means for releasing the tension before the band is severed from the stock by knife 33. The band guide frame 1 has a horizontal guide-way defining slots 3a, 4 through which the band enters and leaves the sealing mechanism. After clamp 38 has gripped the front end of the band, the band is wound round the parcel and tensioned, whereupon block 5 is moved upwards to clamp the band against part 6. Block 21 is now moved upwards to seal the overlapped bands against ribbed surface 28 of cover-plate 24. As block 21 moves downward after sealing, the clamp 5 is released to remove tension. A block 15 now moves towards frame 1 between plates 10, 11 until knife 33 carried by a sidepiece 20 severs the band. As block 15 moves forwards, cross-pin 32 rides up cam surfaces 35 on plates 10, 11 and lifts side-piece 20 for retraction by springs 30. A side-piece 19 carrying a block 37 moves with block 15 in the forward movement. Slots 39, 40 for the band are formed in the block 37. . The clamps, sealing block, and block 15 are actuated by air cylinders such as 164, 212, 137, under control of valves which are electromagnetically controlled.
