Abstract
1334616 Seaming non-metallic sheet material HAMAC-HANSELLA GmbH 16 Dec 1971 [19 Dec 1970] 58449/71 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A device 25 for welding and severing thermoplastic films comprising two pairs of clamping jaws 41, 51 and 42, 52 lying one above the other, two parallel pairs of welding jaws 43, 53 and 44, 54 arranged therebetween, and a severing tool 55 arranged between the welding jaws, is characterized in that at least one clamping jaw 52 of the lower pair 42, 52 is retractable separately from the other clamping jaws. In a packaging machine, thermoplastic film 21 passes from a roll 14 around rollers 15, 19, 16, 20, 18 and is formed into a tube 22 around a former 12 by a member 13. The overlapping longitudinal edges are welded by a shoe 23. The transverse welding device 25 comprises two parallel U-section beams 33, 34 arranged on guide rods 31, 32 and connected to each other by chains 35, 35<SP>1</SP> guided around sprockets 36, 36<SP>1</SP>. Tension springs 37, 37<SP>1</SP> retain the beams 33, 34 in the non-operative position. The jaws 41, 42 are secured to the beam 33 and a block 46 defining the jaws 43, 44 separated by a groove 45 is fixed therebetween. The operative faces of the jaws 41, 42, 43, 44 lie in a vertical plane and the beam is movable by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 38. The jaw 51 is rigidly fixed to the beam 34 and the jaw 52 is movable within the beam 34 towards and away from the jaw 42 and is shorter than the jaw 51. The jaws 53, 54 separated by the knife 55 are mounted on a block 50 supported on pins 56 horizontally movable in the beam 34 by a cylinder 57. The jaw 52 is carried by guides 60 supported on bolts 59 fixed to the block 50. Compression springs 62 press the guides 60 against the block 50. Heating strips 65, 66 are provided on the jaws 53, 54 and channels 67, 68 terminating in nozzles 69 for cooling air are provided in the jaws 51, 52. In operation, during downward film feeding movement of the device 25, the jaws 41, 51, 42, 43, 44 first engage the tube 22 with the jaws 41, 51 co-operating and the block 50 is then moved towards the tube 22. The jaw 52 contacts the tube and co-operates with the jaw 42. The knife 55 severs the tube and the jaws 53, 54 co-operate with the jaws 43, 44 to effect welding. As the jaws 53, 54 start to withdraw, cooling air is supplied through the nozzles 69. On withdrawal of the jaw 52, the package is removed on to a conveyer 28, Fig. 1, by tilting a support plate 27. In a modification (not shown), the jaws 42, 52 are each movable and controllable separately from the jaws 41, 51.
