Abstract

1,136,746. Crimping yarns. LEESONA CORP. 19 April, 1966 [20 April, 1965], No. 17041/66. Headings D1D and D1F. In apparatus for false-twist crimping thermoplastic yarn comprising a false twist device (10, 20) Figs. I and 2 not shown, and a preceeding heating zone, a preheater device is provided between the yarn supply means and the heating zone. The preheater comprises spaced feed rolls 53, 54 driven at a speed related to the speed of delivery rollers (11 21) to control the yarn tension between the sets of rollers and heated to raise the temperature of the yarn to a value below that necessary to effect reorientation of the molecules of the yarn. With nylon the temperature of the heater zone would be 430‹F. to 480‹F. and the temperature of the preheater zone would be 270‹F. and 330‹F. Rollers 53, 54 are hollow, see Fig 4 not shown, and are mounted over blocks (43, 44) mounted on a plate 41 heated by elements 42. A twist stopper 15 is provided on the delivery side of the preheater rollers adjacent the entrance to the heating zone which contains a plate 31 heated by elements 32. The heating and preheating zones are surrounded by block insulation. Rollers 53, 54 are provided with parallel grooves to space adjacent yarns passing thereabout. The surface of the rollers is such as to allow the yarn to contract and slip thereover. In Fig. 5 not shown the preheater rollers are without grooves and a roller (160) biassed by a weighted lever engages preheater roller (154) to nip the yarn thereagainst particularly just after the yarn engages and just before the yarn leaves roller (154). In this case a twist stopper 15 may be dispensed with.
