890,332. Apparatus for thermally processing yarns. SEEM, W. A., STODDARD, N. J., GIBSON, K. H., MILLER, H. B., and HILBERT, R. G. Feb. 28, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 6487/58. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for thermally processing yarns, more particularly for post-treating torque stretch and other bulk yarns, includes a twister spindle, a thermally insulated electric heater, temperature control means associated with the heater and means for controlling yarn tension at a value different from the winding up tension.- In one form of apparatus, yarns from bobbins on creel pins 22 are led through guide loops 23, disc tensioners 24 and over rollers 25 to stop motion drop eyes 27, roller tension device 30, heating plate 41, liquid applicator roll 50, stop motion 67, second roller tension device 60 and twisting spindle 70. The heating plate 41 is carried on an insulating block 40. and has insulated covers 45 on either side of a curved contact element which may have a plain yarn engaging surface, or may have a narrow groove to receive one or two yarns, or may have several grooves for a greater number of yarns, or a single wide groove. Instead of heater plates, tubular heaters as described in Specification 803,110 may be used. With both forms of heaters thermostatic control arrangements are provided and a thermometer may be mounted on the heater plate 41. Each roller tension device 30, 60 consists of pairs of rolls 31, 32, 61, 62 driven from drive shafts 33, 63 through clutches, and nip rolls 34, 64. If desired, an additional roller tension device may be mounted above the device 30 and by regulation of the drive shafts two distinct zones may be utilized. In such cases disc tensioners 24 and:rollers 25 may be dispensed with. The apparatus may be used for cold stretching yarn by omitting or bypassing the heater.
