Abstract

1,135,746. Feeding sheets. RANK XEROX Ltd. 14 Dec., 1965 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 24630/67. Divided out of 1,135,742 Heading B6B. In apparatus for separating sheets from the top of a stack, double separation is prevented by mounting at each side of the front of the stack a sheet-restraining element comprising a tubular bracket, such as 356, secured to an adjustable side-plate confining the stack, and housing a vertically movable plunger 354. The plunger has a radial slot 360 within which is fitted one leg 361 of a bent element 362 which faces the top front edge of the sheet stack, and has a tongue or snubber element 358 thereon which is adapted to rest, under gravity, on the corner of the top sheet of the stack. The parts 358, 361, 362 can be a unitary structure stamped from sheet material. When the top sheet of the stack is moved forward by friction rollers (367, Figs. 1 and 2), the leading corners of the sheet engage the elements 358, and the sheet will buckle upwardly and inwardly before final separation from the stack. The lower ends (364) of the two plungers are rounded and made of polytetrafluoroethylene, and the plungers are automatically raised by the engagement of these ends with inclined plates (365) when the tray (20) for the sheet stack is withdrawn. As described in Specification 1,135,742, the apparatus is used in xerographic reproducing apparatus, and the sheet stack is supported in a tray (20) having upright sides (292, 293, Fig. 2) which can be moved toward and away from each other symmetrically about the centre of the tray by a linkage system. Further, the tray (20) is moved upwardly automatically, to maintain the top of the sheet stack at a substantially constant height, by a motor drive and switching arrangement.
