In a mechanical seal comprising a retainer 10 housing a rigid sealing washer 14, a flexible sealing element 17, a washer 25 and springs 23 that abut the washer 25 and, when the seal is installed on a shaft urge the washer 14 against a seal seat and press the element 17 into sealing contact with the washer 14 and the shaft, the washer 25 has ears (30-33, Fig. 3) which extend into L-shaped openings 34, 35 in the retainer and, prior to and during installation, is positioned so that the ears engage in the peripherally extending portions 37 of the openings, as in Fig. 1, to thereby prevent the springs acting on the element 17. The washer 14 is held captive in the retainer by a snap ring 26 and a spreader ring 21 engages a V-groove in the element 17, which has a tapered face 18 engaging a complementary face on the washer 14. The washer 25 is inserted in the retainer by first canting it as shown in Fig. 2, then pressing it upwards and backwards until the ears engage the axially extending portion 36 of the openings; the washer may then be pressed against the springs 23 and rotated so that the ears engage in portions 37 and abut the sides 38 as in Fig. 1.
