Abstract

1,129,483. Vacuum switches; transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Feb., 1967 [8 March, 1966], No. 9472/67. Headings H1N and HIT. The bursting of vacuum switch 26, when liquid in which the switch is immersed has leaked into the switch envelope 50, is prevented by disabling the switch operating mechanism 28 when a rise in pressure occurs in the switch envelope. In the transformer tap changing arrangement shown, a passage 54 extends from the interior of the envelope through the stem 53 of the fixed switch contact 51 to an expansible chamber 60 on the outer end of the stem 53. When the pressure in the envelope 50 increases, a changeover switch 34 is operated by the chamber 60 to open contacts 63 in series with the push-button switch 33 which initiates a tap change operation. Thus opening of the contacts 63 prevents energization of the drive motor 30 of the tap changer unless a tap changing operating cycle is in progress, in which case the cycle is completed before the opening of contacts 35 breaks the motor circuit. The switch 34 also closes contacts 64 to operate an alarm 65. The vacuum switch provides, in effect, the arcing contacts for an otherwise conventional tap changer and the arrangement disclosed may be mounted directly in the transformer oil.
