Abstract
1,129,233. Electrical connectors. AMP Inc. 17 May, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 22809/67. Heading H2E. A connector comprises a channel-shaped conducting ferrule having pairs of tongues 8a, 8b and 10a, 10b struck from its base 4, and sidewalls 6 with portions 19 and ears 22 which, on crimping, force insulated wires 15 into slots 12 in the tongues, the slot edges cutting through the insulation to contact cores 13. A waterrepellent insulating film 24 of ionomer resin or other plastics material is heat bonded to the outer surface of the ferrule and extends beyond the sidewalls and ends of the ferrule as shown at 26 and 25 respectively. A second insulating film 28 is bonded to film 24 and encloses the rest of the ferrule. On crimping, the film 28 is ruptured by the edges of slots 12, and moistureresistant material 40, which may be of polyisobutylene impregnated polyurethane foam or other plastics material, flows through the ruptures to seal the connections between the wire and tongues and the wire ends (41). A seam (39, Fig. 4, not shown) is formed as a result of crimping and is sealed by engagement of portions of the film 28. The film 24 may be a laminate or the connector may be covered with plastics material by fluid-bed coating methods or by spraying.
