Abstract
1,128,200. Stiffeners. BIXBY BOX TOE CO. Inc. 25 July, 1967 [10 Aug., 1966], No. 34090/67. Heading A3B. [Also in Division C3] A stiffener, particularly a toe puff, is formed from a thermoplastic resin incorporating 0.25 to 2.5% by weight of a release wax which is thermally stable up to 500‹F., has a melting point over 212‹F. and is slightly incompatible with the resin at ambient temperatures whereby the wax migrates to the surface of the 2 resin without significantly reducing the tensile strength of the stiffener. Suggested resins are copolyesters or a mixture of copolyesters and the suggested wax is N, N<SP>1</SP>- methylene-bis-stear-amide. The blended compositiion is melted and formed into a toe puff in an open mould. The mould is cooled, solidifying the mould-contacting surface of the toe puff and whilst the exposed surface remains tacky it is pressed against a flexible shoe upper. The mould is then withdrawn. The migration of the wax to the surface of the stiffener on cooling enables easy release of the stiffener from the mould cavity and prevents its sticking e.g. to a last in subsequent operations.
