Abstract
1,121,378. Soot blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORP. 13 March, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 11717/67. Heading F2N. A wall box seal assembly for mounting on a port 14 of a heatexchanger for providing access for a soot blower nozzle into the interior of the heat-exchanger, comprises a hollow housing 18 having a pair of spaced-apart end walls 34, 46 formed with axially aligned ports 36, 52, a plate 58 slidably overlying the inner surface of the wall 46 and provided with an aperture 60, a segmental seal ring 66 secured to the plate and having an annular edge 70 in sliding sealing relationship with a sootblower nozzle tube 20, for example, a collar 44 including an annular wall 72, the forward portion of which encircles the tube and is in sliding sealing relationship with the wall 34 and the rearward portion of which is in sliding sealing relationship against the plate 58. The collar, plate and housing define an internal chamber 82 which encircles the tube 20, and there are means for supplying a pressurized fluid to the chamber, the annular wall 72 being formed with nozzle apertures 78 for discharging the fluid around the tube 20 and toward the forward end of the collar. The pressurized fluid prevents escape of gases from the interior of the heat-exchanger out through the wall box and serves to cool the nozzle of the nozzle tube; upon complete withdrawal of the nozzle tube from the wall box, a higher pressure fluid is fed to the chamber 82 whereupon a conical air stream with an apex 80 is formed to prevent any escape of gases through the open wall box. The housing is provided pivotal means so that the nozzle tube is maintained in axial alignment with the port 14, and to provide for further latitude of the angular deflection of the nozzle tube the sleeve 16 may be of elliptical configuration.
