Abstract
759,440. Refrigerating. GARRETT CORPORATION. Oct. 8, 1954 [Oct. 30, 1953], No. 29039/54. Class 29. In a vortex tube 10 having a cold air outlet pipe 12 of smaller diameter extending slightly into it at the end, the pipe 12 is formed with a collar 16 fitting inside the tube 10 and formed with a plurality of helically directed nozzle passages 17 so that the compressed gas from an annular chamber 19 is directed into the tube 10 in helical streams. The tube is provided with a cooling jacket 30. As shown, the nozzle passages 17 and an outlet pipe 12 are provided at both ends of the tube and the passages at one end may be directed in the same sense as or the opposite sense to those at the other end. In a modification, the passages 17 and pipe 12 are provided at one end only and a throttle valve, which can be completely closed, is provided at the other end. A plurality of tubes can be mounted in a single cooling jacket, the nozzles being supplied from a common gas manifold and the pipes 12 feeding into a common cold air header.
