Abstract

1,120,553. Direction indication switches for road vehicles. N.S.F. Ltd. 7 Dec., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964], No. 49702/64. Heading G4Q. [Also in Division H1] An automatic return mechanism for a direction indicator switch comprising a pair of arms 23, Fig. 2, co-operating with a cam on the steering column, is characterized in that the arms are removably secured on the rotatable body portion 11 of the switch, for example by a pair of integral bosses shaped so as to be frictionally held in mating recesses in the body. This fastening may be supplemented by adhesives or rivets, and has the advantage that arms of different form may be fixed to otherwise identical switches. The operating lever for rotating the body 11 is also pivoted about a pin carried in spaced index frames on the body, and may be movable to one of three positions: in the central position a spring arm 25a makes connection with a fixed contact 29; in an upper position this connection is broken and a further spring arm makes connection with one of a pair of contacts; and in a lower position the further arm makes connection with the other contact whilst the first arm 25a makes connection with its contact. The further arm and its contacts may control flashing of the headlamps for signalling purposes, and detent frames may be shaped to cause the lever to return from the upper position to the mid-position under the bias of a spring (32). The lever may also include a horn switch at its end comprising a movable conical member (45, Fig. 5, not shown) adapted to bridge a pair of spring contacts (41 and 43).
