Abstract

1,214,385. Direction indicator switches. SWF-SPEZIALFABRIK FUER AUTOZUBEHOER GUSTAV BAU G.m.b.H. 14 Oct., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967], No. 48565/68. Heading G4Q. [Also in Division H1] In a lever-actuated direction indicator switch mounted on the steering column of an automotive vehicle and adapted to be returned automatically by a reset member on the steering column, a casing cover 12, Fig. 1, mounted on an insulating base-plate 11 is arranged to retain the movable switching members in position on the base-plate 11. Switching member 15 carrying lever 38 in recess 37 is mounted on two integral bearing pins 18, 19 projecting respectively into apertures 13, 14 in the cover 12 and base-plate 11. A switching cam 22 mounted above the member 15 and also retained in position by the cover 12 has bearing pins 23, 24 engaging in recesses 26 in the cover 12 and cam slot 25, Fig. 2, in the member 15. The cam 22 is urged towards reset member 52 on the steering column by tension springs 29. On operation by lever 38 switch member 15 with its integral cam slot 25 moves to one side so that switch cam 22 moves towards the axis of steering column under action of springs 29, 30 as soon as the reset member 52 has moved to one side. On return of the reset member 52 it engages one side of the cam 22 which is thereby tilted to engage one or other of flexible return members 20, 21 integral with the member 15 to return the switch to the neutral position. The flexibility of the return members 20, 21 permits the reset members 52 to return while the lever 38 is restrained. A spring- loaded detent ball 32 in a recess 31 of the switch member 15 engages a fixed detent cam 16 to assist in restoring the switch member 15 to the neutral position. Switch member 15 carries a movable contact 36 yieldingly urged against fixed rivet contacts 45 and held in position by a pair of springs 35, Fig. 4 (not shown). Lever 38 may also pivot on bearings 39 in the switching member 15 for activating a horn or lamp flashing switch. This switch comprises a movable spring arm contact 47 riveted to the cover 12 and forced by the arm 38 into engagement with a fixed contact 51, Fig. 5 (not shown). The contact ends are bent up at 45 degrees so that the faces slide after abutment. The switch arm 38 is rendered retractive by means of a spring-loaded ball 43 mounted at its inner end and engaging a ramp 44.
