Abstract
1,221,648. Mechanical switches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 24 July, 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 35953/67. Heading H1N. A direction indicator switch for road vehicles of the kind cancelled by a striker on the steering shaft comprises a body 11 adapted to be non- rotatably secured to the steering column, a rotor 15 mounted on body 11 for angular movement from a neutral position to either of two operating positions wherein direction indicator lamps are energized and detent means for maintaining rotor 15 in either of its operating positions. The detent means comprises a detent member 19 slidably carried on body 11 and having a part 21 engageable with rotor 15 in either of its operative positions, detent member 19 being urged by resilient means 20a . to engage part 21 with rotor 15, the switch including a detent release member 27 movable in response to cancelling movement of the striker and engageable with detent member 19 to move member 19 against the action of resilient means 20a to allow rotor 15 to be returned by the striker from either of its operative positions to its neutral position. As shown, rotor 15 is journalled in body 11 and bearing block 14 fastened to body 11, and rotor 15 carries an operating lever 18. When rotor 15 is in its neutral position part 21 engages in a groove 24 in rotor 15 between conical projections 22, 23. When rotor 15 is turned by lever 18 to one of its operative positions, part 21 is moved outwards by the projection 22 or 23 over the projection to rest against the outside of the projection 22 or 23, rotor 15 being held between part 21 and the lug at the base of handle 18 engaging stop 17a or 176 on bearing block 14. Detent release plate 27 turns with rotor 15 and projections on its underside engage moving contact arm 34 or 35 of phosphor bronze wire spring 32 secured by rivet 33 to move the arm into contact with fixed contact 36 or 37. When the rotor 15 is turned to an operative position arms 25 or 26 of rotor 15 are moved into the path of the striker. As the vehicle turns, the steering wheel is turned and the striker engages the inner face of arm 25 or 26 which flex outwardly so that the striker rides past the arm without cancelling the switch. When the turn is completed and the steering wheel is turned back the striker engages cam 25a or 26a on arms 25, 26 which flexes the arm 25 or 26 inwardly pressing plate 27 outwardly to engage part 21 and move it outwardly so that the pressure of the striker on cam 25a or 26a moves rotor 15 back to its neutral position, part 21 re-engaging in groove 24 in rotor 15 and groove 28 in plate 27.
