Abstract
1,038,802. Switches held set and freed mechanically. BOYNE PRODUCTS Inc. Jan. 13, 1964 [April 23, 1963], No. 407/64. Heading H2B. [Also in Division G4] A self-cancelling direction signal operating apparatus comprises a support 4 for an actuating member 17 (Fig. 5), springs 38, 38a biasing the actuating member to a neutral position, latching means operable releasably to maintain the actuating member in at least one operating position the latching means being released by member such as 32 carried by the actuating member. As described, the actuating member 17 is carried by a shaft 15 pivoted in an hourglass hole 14 in the support 4 which is attached to a housing (not shown) at the upper end of the steering column 1. Fig. 5 shows the actuating member 17 deflected in an anticlockwise direction by movement of a handle 16 and retained in that position by engagement of a detent 35 in an abutment 37 forming part of the support 4. When the steering column 1 is rotated in an anticlockwise direction at the completion of a turn, a cam 3 attached to a band 2 around the steering column 1, deflects release member 32 which will disengage the detent 35 and allow the actuating member 17 to restore to a neutral position under control of spring 38. Alternatively, the cam 3 may form part of the underside of the hub of the steering wheel. Both the support 4 and actuating member 17 are moulded from nylon. Fig. 7 shows the underside view of an alternative arrangement in which the actuating member 48 is retained in its anticlockwise drirection by engagement of a pin 47 in a recess 46 formed in a flexible arm 45 on the the support. The actuating member 48 is released by movement of the cam 3 in an anticlockwise direction, deflecting the release arm 52 against the arm 45. Electric switches.-Fig. 3 shows the underside view of the actuating member 17 which comprises conductive members 24, 25 retained between abutment 30 and engaging conductive posts 28, 29 and co-operating with fixed contacts 12, 12a, 13, 13a on the support (Fig. 2).
