Abstract

1,031,759. Mechanical switches, without quick action; retractive switches; switches held set and freed mechanically. N.F.S. Ltd. Dec. 20, 1963 [Dec. 20, 19611, No. 48096/62. Heading H2B. The operating arm 13, Fig. 4, of a multi-purpose switch suitable for mounting on a vehicle steering column is pivoted at 15 on an insulating body member 11 which is itself pivoted transversely by means of its ends 11a and 11b on an insulating base 10, Fig. 1, with support bracket 12. Sideways movement of arm 13 causes a contact (not shown) on member 11 to bridge fixed contacts, such as 18, 19, on base 10 for operation of direction signals. A spring- urged steel ball on member 11 co-operates with projections 20 on base 10 to locate the three positions of member 11, and resilient arms 16, 17 integral with member 11 are provided for automatic cancellation of signals in known manner. Downward movement of arm 13 depresses spring blade 23 (Fig. 2) away from fixed contact 25 and allows blade 22 to engage it, for dipping headlamps, for example. A pawl 26 (Fig. 4) maintains the arm 13 in depressed condition but has not latching effect when the arm is lifted (to flash headlamps, for example) by moving blade 22 into engagement with fixed contact 24. The end of arm 13 carries a slidable sleeve 37 comprising a pushbutton switch (Fig. 6, not shown) for sounding the horn.
