Abstract

1,182,213. Mechanical switches. VIFVITALONI S.A.S. DI VITALONI MARIO, GIOVANNI & C. 5 Sept., 1968 [1 March, 1968], No. 42235/68. Heading H1N. Switching control apparatus for attachment to a motor vehicle steering column comprises a central support 1<SP>1</SP> adapted to be mounted on a stationary part of the steering column and a number exceeding two of pre-assembled switches 160, 161, 323, mounted on support 1<SP>1</SP>, each including a plurality of electrical contacts controlled by a single control lever 167, 168, 324, which effects selective operation of the contacts according to different movements of the control lever. Support 1<SP>1</SP> is preferably a plastics moulding with extensions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> for securing support 1<SP>1</SP> to a stationary part of the steering column and extensions 3, 3<SP>1</SP> to secure plastics cover 4<SP>1</SP> Switch 160 is for direction indicators, switch 161 for lights and switch 323 for the windscreen wiper and windscreen washer pump. Tubular member 15 attached to the steering shaft effects release of the direction indicator switches after a turn. Lever 168 of switch 161 is adapted to rock about a transverse axis extending substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the steering shaft, performs angular displacements about its longitudinal axis and displacements along its longitudinal axis. Switch 161 is attached to support 1<SP>1</SP> by lugs 321, having inclined upper surfaces to permit rocking movement of switch 161 in a plane containing the axis of the steering shaft to operate spring contact 322, Fig. 1 (not shown), between switches 160, 161 to operate the horn. Switch 323 is depicted in detail in Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7 (not shown). Lever 324 of switch 323 terminates in an actuating member 329, Fig. 4, secured in its housing by two opposite coaxial pins engaging slots, the slot for the upper pin being longer than the pin to permit rocking of lever 324 in a plane containing the axis of the steering shaft to cause an arm on actuating member 329 to operate a contact comprising a spring bent to a U-shape for the windscreen washing pump. The lower pin on actuating member 329 fits into a rotatable member, rotatable with member 329, the rotatable member being provided with a semicircular flange guiding a plurality of balls 338, Fig. 7, for operating two oscillatory discs adapted to open and close sets of contacts. The arm on actuating member 329 has a ball at its end urged outwardly of the arm by a spring and adapted to be engaged in notches to act as locating means for the lever 324.
