Abstract

1,118,447. Rollers. W. R. GRACE & CO. 1 Nov., 1965 [10 Nov., 1964; 6 July, 1965], No. 46145/65. Heading F2U. A roller, especially for use in printing, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), consists of an incompressible, e.g. steel, core (11) and two or more layers (12) of a volume compressible (i.e. volume reducible under pressure), resilient, porous material having a residual porosity of at least 37 per cent at 0À1 mm. compression. The material may be a woven fabric or preferably a non-woven sheet, the fibres being cellulosic, preferably of cotton linters, or nylon or rayon. The material is impregnated with an elastomer, such as natural or synthetic rubber modified by a resinous material, urea, melamine, epoxy or phenol based resin, e.g. as described in Specification 947,602. The layers are secured together by an adhesive (13) and the outer surface of the roller is covered by a thin layer (14) of an elastomer. In a further form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the core and outer layers are separated by a ring (35) of highly flexible and compressible material such as sponge rubber, cellular neoprene or polyurethane foam.
