Abstract

1432813 Blanket used in stereotype production W R GRACE & Co 20 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39334/73 Heading B6C [Also in Division B5] A stereotype-moulding blanket comprises a compressible impregnated felt laminated on at least one face to a textile fabric of extensible fibre, the felt being 0À015 to 0À040 inches thick and having a firmness such that a pressure of at least 10 psi must be applied to effect an initial compression of 2 mils and having a residual porosity of at least 37 % after 4 mils compression. The felt may be impregnated with a vulcanized natural rubber latex, may be air- or water-laid and is of wood, cotton, rayon, nylon or acrylonitrile-vinyl chloride copolymer fibres, but particularly comprises 70% mercerized cotton linters and 30% short paper-making fibres. It may contain 60-140% by weight of the impregnant. The textile may be a square- or plain-woven nylon fabric weighing 0À9-8À3% oz./sq. yd. and may be bonded to one or both faces of the felt by means of a butadieneacrylonitrile adhesive together with pressing under heat. In a method of moulding a stereotype mat, a flong is pressed against a raised image such as set type, to form a matrix impression of the image, by means of a blanket as above, the textile lamination of the blanket facing the flong.
