Abstract

964,738. Laminates. B. F. GOODRICH CO. Feb. 19, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 6318/62. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B6] A laminate suitable for use as a printing plate comprises an elastomeric facing layer 11 carrying a printing design (not shown), a backing layer 13 of elastomeric material, and a dimensionally stable fabric reinforcement 12 interposed between said facing layer 11 and the backing layer 13, the layer 13 having a higher modulus of elasticity than the layer 11 and the layers 11 and 13 and the reinforcement 12 being moulded into an integral structure. The fabric reinforcement 12 may be of polyester, nylon, acrylic, or glass fibres and may be impregnated with a neoprene rubber composition and dipped into a neoprene latex adhesive composition. The backing layer 13 which may comprise a butadiene-acrylonitrile composition is calendered on to one face of the fabric reinforcement 12 and located in a mould. A facing layer 11 comprising a natural rubber composition is then placed in contact with the reinforcement and the mould is closed and heated to 307 ‹ F. at a pressure of 450 pounds per sq. inch. The backing layer may be of a natural rubber composition provided its modulus of elasticity is higher than that of the facing layer. Because of the higher modulus of elasticity of the layer 13 the laminate curls around said layer.
