The spindles of a spinning &c., frame are donned and doffed by doffing one or more bobbins at a time from the spindles, putting the bobbin(s) so doffed into a storage container (e.g. one as described in Specification 1,118,051) in aligned arrangement, and removing a corresponding number of empty bobbins from the container and transferring them to the doffed spindle. In Fig. 6, a carriage 2 with a support 8 for moving parts and a shoot 18 runs on the spindle-nail 6. As an empty bobbin released from the container, which is towed behind the carriage as described in the Specification referred to, comes down the shoot it depresses a trigger 22 to rotate a balanced arm 26 and operate a valve 28. This admits pressure-fluid to a port 38 in a fixed cylinder 40, Fig. 9 and connects a port 56 to a bleed 58. A piston 42 is thus caused to descend, taking with it an attached cylinder 46 and a rod 44 which thus rocks a pivoted lever 66. This is pivoted to an arm 70, the other end of which engages one of a number of studs spaced along the rail 6 according to the spacing of the spindles. The carriage is thus indexed to the next spindle. The cylinders 40, 46 communicate at 78, and as pressure below piston 42 can only escape through bleed 56, the piston 48 remains at the top of the cylinder 46 until the pressure therein reaches atmospheric. At this stage, the piston descends, taking with it an attached tube 52 secured also to a cylinder 50 which thus slides down over cylinder 40 and lowers a doffing- head 10. As the cylinder descends, it is rotated by a roller running on a curved track, so that the head comes above the next spindle to be deffed, and a bracket 60 engages shoot 18 and moves it arcuately away from the spindle. When the claws of the head engage the filled bobbin, the condition of valve 36 is reversed by a pant 104 engaging arm 26, thus admitting pressure to port 56. While piston 48 was descending, it had moved clear of a head 80. opening a port in the piston to place tube 52 in communication with the cylinder 46 and hence. through port 78 with port 56. The head is thus put under pressure, and its claws made to grip the bobbin. With pressure at port 56, piston 42, cylinder 46, tube 52 and cylinder 50 ascend, and the head is raised above a shoot (106) in the storage container, Fig. 1A, not shown, while the shoot 18 is freed to pivot back by a spring, a forked arm 108 locating it in line with the spindle which has been doffed. Lever 44 also rises to free arm 68 to be returned by biassing means and causes arm 70 to descend over the next locating stud. When cylinder 50 reaches the top of its stroke. the head 80 closes the port in the piston and cuts off the pressure to head 10 so that the claws release the bobbin into shoot (106). where it is acted upon as described in the Specification referred to. The empty bobbin thus released from the top of the container, falls down shoot (118) into shoot 18 on to spindle 20 and restart the cycle.
