Class 120(2) Doffing apparatus for spinning frames comprises a lifting rack vertically slidable parallel to the spindles for engaging the lower ends of full packages and a horizontal rail provided with holders for empty tubes or bobbins and a perforated slide member adapted to release the tubes or bobbins on to the spindles. The horizontal rail is capable of being lowered to press released tubes or bobbins home on the spindles. The lifting rack 21, Fig. 1, is mounted in a frame 14 pivoted at 17 to the spinning machine frame for movement from an inoperative position (broken lines) to an operative position wherein recessed portions of the rack pass under cops 23 to raise them from the spindles when a handle 20a is rotated to raise the rack 21 by means of straps, such as 26. As the cops 23 are raised to the tops of their spindles, a deflector blade 27 is drawn forwards to topple the cops 23 on to a travelling band 29 by which they are conveyed to one end of the machine for collection. The band 29 and its supports are hingedly mounted upon the rack 21 or its sliders 22. A stationary knife 34 is associated with the band 29 for severing the yarns when they are trapped against its edge by the downward movement of the deflector blade 27. A horizontal donning rail 36 Fig. 5, is drawn downwards from an inoperative position when the spindles are empty and tubes 13 which had been standing in the holders 42 are released to fall upon the spindles by a sliding movement of apertured member 42. The rail 36 may be further lowered to press the tubes 13 firmly on the spindles. The doffing and donning movements may be effected automatically.
