Abstract
The invention comprises per se the compound (A) of formula <FORM:1117971/C4-C5/1> and the compound (B) of formula <FORM:1117971/C4-C5/2> compound (A), named 3-(5-hexenyl)-cyclobutene, is prepared by irradiating trans-1,3,9-decatriene, preferably with u/v light at 10-50 DEG C. in the presence of an ether or hydrocarbon solvent. Compound (B), named 4-methyl-3-(41-pentenyl)-cyclobutene, is prepared by irradiating 2,4,9-decatriene under similar conditions. The starting material for compound (B), 2,4,9-decatriene, is prepared by heating 1,4,9-decatriene at 40-200 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal compound, e.g. NaOH, KOH or an alcoholate, to effect isomerization, optionally in the additional presence of a reaction medium which may be a mono- or poly-alcohol, or an ether, or a mixture of any of these with dimethyl sulphoxide.
