Abstract
3-Indole aldehyde is made by adding indole to an ethereal solution of alkyl magnesium bromide containing not more than four carbon atoms in the alkyl radical while withdrawing gaseous paraffinic hydrocarbon as it is formed, continuing the addition until the gaseous hydrocarbon is no longer evolved, adding to the resultant ethereal solution of indole magnesium bromide between 0.8 and 2.5 molecular equivalents of an alkyl formate, e.g. methyl or ethyl formate per mol. of indole magnesium bromide, heating the mixture in a closed vessel. N-formyl indole which is also present in the reaction mixture is removed therefrom by extraction with a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon. A detailed example is given.
