Abstract

Pyrazine is made by suspending a pyrazine-carboxylic acid in an inert high boiling liquid such as diethyl- or di-n-butyl-phthalate, and heating the suspension to about 200 DEG C. until decarboxylation occurs and the pyrazine distills from the reaction mixture. Examples are given starting with pyrazinemono-, -2,3-di-, -2,3,5-tri-, and -tetra-carboxylic acid.
