Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the production of perfluorocyclohexene or a perfluoromethylcyclohexene having one or more trifluoromethyl substituents, by pyrolysing perfluorocyclohexylcarboxylic acid or a perfluoromethyl cyclohexyl carboxylic acid having at least one trifluoromethyl group and at least one beta-fluorine atom at about 550 DEG C. and isolating the fluorocarbon produced. Elimination of HF as well as decarboxylation takes place according to the following equation in the case of perfluorocyclohexyl carboxylic acid itself: <FORM:0787919/IV (b)/1> An example is given in which the above acid is heated at 550 DEG C. in a carbon-lined steel tube to give the c-C6F10. Other acids which may be used include those having one or two CF3 groups and 2 : 2 : 6-triperfluoromethyl cyclohexyl carboxylic acids (perfluoronaphthenic acids), obtainable by the process of Specification 686,678.
