Abstract

Linalool is prepared by pyrolizing pinane-2-ol at a temperature in the range 500-650 DEG C. in the absence of protons or Lewis acids. Different isomers of linalool are obtained depending on the isomer of pinane-2-ol used as starting material. In addition to linalool the product may contain 2, 4-dimethyl-octadi-2, 7-en-4-ol, 2, 2-dimethyl-3-ethyl cyclobutylmethyl ketone, a -terpineol and 1, 2-dimethyl-3-iso propenyl-cyclo-1-pentanol. The process is preferably carried out in a stainless steel tube and also in the presence of a base, for example, pyridine or dimethyl aniline.
