Abstract

A process for converting a bicyclo-(2,2,1)-2,5-heptadiene compound into the isomeric 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene compound comprises subjecting the heptadiene to thermal isomerization at an elevated temperature which is below that at which the principal isomerizate formed is an aromatic compound. Preferred temperatures for isomerization are 425-475 DEG C. for 1 to 10 seconds for hydrocarbons, and 195-315 DEG C. for chlorocompounds. Pressures of 5 to about 250 lbs. absolute may be used. Specified starting compounds are bicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 1 - methylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5-heptadiene, 2 - methylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5-heptadiene, 2,5- and 2,6-dimethylbicyclo-(2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 2,3 - dimethylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 1,2,3 - trimethylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 2 - methyl - 3 - propylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 2 - hexyl - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 2 - phenylbicyclo - (2,2,1 - 2,5 - heptadiene, 2 - methyl - 6 - phenylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, 1 - methyl - 2 - phenylbicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene, tetracyclododeca - 2,6 - diene, 1,2,3,4,7,7 - hexachlorobicyclo - (2,2,1) - 2,5 - heptadiene.
