Abstract

4-Carbomethoxy-5- phenylcyclohexa-1:3-dione is prepared by condensing benzal acetone with dimethyl malonate. The ester may be hydrolysed and decarboxylated to give 5-phenyl-cyclohexa-1:3-dione. Similarly, p-anisalacetone is reacted with dimethyl malonate and the product hydrolysed and decarboxylated to give 5(p-anisyl) cyclohexa-1:3-dione. Further, o-chlorobenzalacetone or p-dimethylaminobenzalacetone is reacted with diethyl malonate to give a 4-carbethoxy-5-aryl-cyclohexa-1:3-dione. U.S.A. Specification 2,500,099 is referred to.
