Abstract

Unsaturated sulphonates are obtained by reacting a d -sultone of the formula <FORM:1099956/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted, with an alcoholate or with compounds or mixtures forming an alcoholate in situ or containing an alcoholate in equilibrium with other components. The reaction is preferably effected by at least partially dissolving the d -sultone, preferably in a C2- 4 saturated alcohol corresponding to the alcoholate used, and adding the alcoholate, preferably derived from a C1- 4 alcohol, in equimolar amounts at temperatures between room temperature and the boiling temperature of the alcohol used. In a preferred method, the sultone is dissolved in ethanol, which is preferably anhydrous, and solid alkali metal hydroxide is added. The amount of alcohol added should be such that the major part of the unsaturated sulphonate fomred separates immediately and any alkoxy sulphonate which may have been formed remains dissolved. Subsequent to the addition of alkali the reaction mixture is boiled under reflux or alternatively the reaction may be effected by heating in an autoclave under pressure.
