Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of Formulae (I) and (II) <FORM:1022865/C2/1> <FORM:1022865/C2/2> wherein each R is H, OH, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, acyl, acyloxy, alkenyl, aralkyl, aralkenyl, aryl or alkaryl; and a process for producing them by irradiating with ultra-violet light a compound of Formula (III) <FORM:1022865/C2/3> the irradiation product being treated either during irradiation or subsequently with an aqueous acid medium. The intermediate, of structure (IV) <FORM:1022865/C2/4> may be isolated if desired. The compounds of the invention may be used as starting materials for producing perfume isolate alcohols, e.g. patchouli alcohol.
