Abstract

The invention comprises 21-alkoxyoxalyl-11-hydroxyprogesterone alkali metal enolates and their preparation by mixing an 11-hydroxyprogesterone with a solution of an alkali metal in an alkanol and an alkyl diester of oxalic acid, at a temperature between about zero degrees Centigrade and the boiling point of the reaction mixture. Subsequently the 21-alkoxyoxalyl-11-hydroxyprogesterone alkali metal enolate may be treated with iodine to produce a 21-iodo-11-hydroxyprogesterone, which is treated with an alkali metal acylate to produce a 21-acyloxy-11-hydroxyprogesterone. Examples describe the preparation of the sodium enolates of 21-(methoxy and ethoxy)-11(a and b )-hydroxyprogesterone and the potassium enorote of 21-ethoxyoxalyl-11(a )-hydroxyprogesterone.
