Abstract

The invention comprises a steroid-lacto-enol acylate having at carbon atom 17 of the steroid nucleus the substituent represented by the following formula: <FORM:0743160/IV(a)/1> wherein Ac represents the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid having from one to eight carbon atoms, inclusive, and the preparation thereof by reacting a steroid having at position 17 the structure <FORM:0743160/IV(a)/2> with an acylating agent, e.g. organic carboxylic acid anhydrides, formic acid, ketene or isopropenyl acylate. The reaction may be effected between 20 degrees centigrade and the boiling point of the reaction mixture. Examples utilize as starting materials 3(a or b )-hydroxy-pregnane - 11,20 - dione - 21 - glyoxalic acid, 3a , 11(a or b )-dihydroxy pregnane-20-one-21-glyoxalic acid, 11(a or b )-hydroxy- or 11-keto-progesterone and 11(a or b )-hydroxypregnane-3,20 - dione - 21 - glyoxalic acid.
